The Incas believed that the center of the world was located in Cuzco, more specifically, in the Urubamba Valley where Machu Picchu was built. Some experts think the location was perfect for astronomical events and also because the geography features a special landscape used for Inca ceremonies and rituals. Whatever the reason, even today these ruins still give to humanity a breath- taking way to experience the wonder of an ancient culture long extinct.
This month in an article from Food and Wine magazine featuring the world’s most beautiful new resorts, I was glad to find a Peruvian resort located in the center of Cuzco, Palacio Nazarenas. This new luxury hotel was originally a convent, so the architecture of old is juxtaposed with modern features like oxygen-enriched air-conditioning for those with altitude sickness. This is just one of the many details that makes this a perfect place to stay, not to mention the fact that their restaurant, Senzo, is under the hands of Virgilio Martinez. This young prominent chef worked with Gaston Acurio at Astrid and Gaston in Lima and uses local ingredients like purple prickly pear and the various herbs that flourish around the hotel. All in all, this hotel appears to be a very special place to stay while visiting Peru. For more information about the Palacio Nazarenas, click here
